SLAVES.
An Ordinance in relation to Slaves in the city and suburbs of New-Orleans as also in the neighborhood thereof, and to other persons herein mentioned.
THE CITY COUNCIL ORDAIN AS FOLLOWS:

ARTICLE 4. No slaves shall assemble or meet together, either in any street, public square, the meat-market, or in any house, building, tavern, or lot, within the city, suburbs, and neighbor- hood of the same, except when attending divine worship, within the churches or temples, and during the hours appointed for that purpose, or when attending funerals or meetings for their sports and dances as hereinafter provided for. And it shall and may be lawful to and for any officer of police, or any watchman, or any other white person, to apprehend all such grown slaves, and any of them assembled and met together contrary to this regulation; and for that purpose, they, and either of them are hereby authorised[sic] and required to enter into any house, building or lot, where such slaves may assemble and meet together. And every slave so apprehended shall immediately be brought to the police jail, where he or she shall receive from ten to thirty lashes, on a warrant from the Mayor, or from any competent tribunal; pro- vided, that no slave found on such occasion, with an express ticket or permission from his or her owner, shall be subject to the said punishment, but the owner aforesaid shall be condemned to pay a fine of from five to fifty dollars. An Ordinance to amend the Ordinance entitled "An Ordinance concerning the Slaves in the city, suburbs and liberties of New-Orleans, and other persons therein mentioned," approved, October 15, 1817.

WHEREAS, article fourth of the ordinance above cited, does not mention the hours at which slaves may meet in temples, churches and other buildings, for religious worship:
                          THE CITY COUNCIL ORDAIN AS FOLLOWS:
ARTICLE 1. The hours which may be consecrated by slaves to religious worship at the places aforesaid, shall be between break of day and sunset.
ARTICLE 2. Any slave found in any temple or church before the break of day or after sunset, shall be liable to the same penal- ties as prescribed in article fourth of the above mentioned ordinance.
ARTICLE 3. The execution of the present ordinance is particularly recommended to all police officers.
