The Louisiana Constitution of 1812 created a Supreme Court. Times changed, and litigation and the types of appeals changed as well. By the 1870’s, the court had a very full docket. To remedy the backlog, the Legislature provided an intermediate layer of courts with the Louisiana Constitution of 1879. Since then, the jurisdiction and number of these courts has changed considerably.
