Today, the state of Louisiana has 64 parishes, 42 Judicial Districts, 7 Supreme Court districts, and 5 Courts of Appeal districts. It was not always like this; many districts have been added and changed several times.
The parish is a governmental unit, but it does not always remain as a whole unit when some districts are formed. Sometimes a parish will be split by ward and precinct: some precincts will be in one district, and the rest may go to a different district.
