In Louisiana, voters elect the justice of the state Supreme Court. Each justice represents a different geographic part of the state. Article VII, Section 9, Louisiana Constitution of 1921 listed the parishes that made up each geographic voting district. Article XIV, Section 16, Louisiana Constitution of 1974 continues on as a statute. Thus, before 1974, voters had to approve a constitutional amendment to change the composition of Supreme Court voting districts. After 1974, the legislature could simply pass an act to change the composition of Supreme Court voting districts.
