The Louisiana Supreme Court Bench since 1813: Home

The Membership of the Court

Many bands from the 1960's still perform today. Usually, the lineup has changed significantly over the years: members leave, members return, new members join the band. The size of the band may also grow and shrink over time. Sometimes the only constant is the actually name of the band. The members who started the band may have left it long ago.

The Louisiana Supreme Court has operated in the same manner. Justices leave the court, and new Justices arrive. Over the years, the state legislature has changed the manner of selecting justices, their terms, retirement age, and even the size of the court.

Sometimes, the Louisiana Supreme Court will appoint a judge to be an Associate Justice Pro Tempore. This may be done when an elected Justice is ill or away from the court for a short period of time. Think of a band hiring an extra musician for part of a tour, or maybe just for the shows in Denver. If a band member is ill, the band may hire a replacement musician for just one concert.

This LibGuide shows which justices have comprised the sitting bench of  "The Louisiana Supreme Court" during all the years since 1813.
