Recognized Tribes in Louisiana

Louisiana has many indigenous groups and people living here. Not all are recognized by other sovereign states. The ones below are recognized by either Louisiana or the federal government. Not all of these tribes have web pages. Some simply have a facebook page. This does not mean that they do not have written constitutions and laws, only that they are not freely available online. Also, indigenous groups have a strong oral tradition, so some sources of law may not be written down. That does not make them less important.

Tribes in Louisiana Not Recognized

Louisiana has other tribes which are not state or federal recognized. They include the Atakapa-Ishak Nation,  Avoyel-Taensa Tribe, the Chahta Tribe, the Louisiana Choctaw Turtle Tribe, the Lacombe Choctaws, and the Talimali Band Apalachee of Louisiana.
