Tribal Law in Louisiana: Home

Historically, many indigenous tribes occupied what is now the State of Louisiana. Many more different tribes were present in the Mississippi valley. Tribes moved as European groups entered from various points. Later, many were moved by force. Federal and state recognition of tribes has waned and waxed over the years. Also, the legal relationships between the federal, state, and tribal governments is ever shifting.

This LibGuide presents information on those tribes now in Louisiana, and the legal relationships between them and the federal and state governments.

map shows large louisiana purchase area, with rivers, names of lands claimed by tribes, and colors for different linguistic families.
