A Brief History of Women Serving on Juries: The way it was

The gradual move towards allowing women to serve on a jury.

Early common law juries were composed of men only. The ability of women to serve on juries is a comparatively recent event. The 1957 film about a criminal jury was named “12 Angry Men” for a reason.

In the 1879 case of Strauder v. West Virginia, 100 U.S. 303 (1879), which prohibited the exclusion of African Americans from a state jury, the Supreme Court said in dictum that a state could constitutionally limit jury membership to males.

     The rights of citizens of the State of Utah to vote and hold office shall not be denied or abridged on account of sex. Both male and female citizens of this State shall enjoy equally all civil, political and religious rights and privileges.
