This guide has some basic information about Small Claims Court in Louisiana. There is also a link to a computer program that will let you create forms for small claims in a Louisiana Justice of the Peace Court. Warning: depending on location, small claims may be in a court other than a Justice of the Peace Court, like a City Court. These forms do not cover small claims that are not in Justice of the Peace Courts. The computer program includes a package of some basic forms, including some forms for bringing a claim and for defending against a claim. The guide and the computer program do not tell you which forms you need for your issue or how to use them. If you do not know which form or forms you need, try to find a lawyer to help you with your claim.
There are programs that offer free legal help for low-income or other qualified people. You can search for free legal help in your parish on LouisianaLawaHelp.org (http://www.louisianalawhelp.org/) and its online directory of free legal services programs: http://louisianalawhelp.org/find-legal-help/directory/area
