Louisiana's state and parish borders were not permanently set in 1812 when the territory became a state. Louisiana's borders were indefinite and in dispute. Spanish land would be claimed. New parishes would be created. In the 20th century, undersea wealth would lead to challenges by Mississippi, Texas, and the United States.
