From creation to the present

The New Court

In 1948, New Orleans got a new court. Act 531 created the Municipal Court of New Orleans, with jurisdiction over the trial of offenses against the Ordinances of the City of New Orleans. The act also abolished the Recorders' Courts of the City of New Orleans.

1948:  old Criminal Courts Building

1949:  moved into the Municipal Auditorium Annex

1951:  on February 12, the new Municipal Courts Building opened at 501 N. Rampart.

1966:  in April, the new Municipal Courts Building opened at 727 S. Broad Street

2019:   Court announced plan to close in 2020 for renovations. Will move to old VA building during this period. 1601 Perdido St.

2023: Court still at temporary location of 1601 Perdido St.
