Pets must be vaccinated, and they must have proof of that vaccination. If a pet bites someone, many municipalities allow for the destruction of that pet if there is no proof of a recent vaccination.
Sec. 14:200. - Requirements for possession.
No person shall own, keep, or harbor any dog, cat or ferret over the age of three (3) months within the parish without having:
(1) The dog, cat or ferret vaccinated against rabies by a licensed veterinarian at three (3) months of age initially, revaccinated one (1) year later and then on an annual or triennial basis thereafter, except in case of injury or any other medical condition that would preclude proper vaccination of the dog or cat or endanger the health of the animal and only upon receipt by the animal control and rescue center of a letter signed by a licensed veterinarian requesting an exception until the medical condition is resolved to the point that vaccination is no longer a threat to the health of the dog or cat.
(2) Registered the dog, cat or ferret with the animal control and rescue center upon presentation of a certificate of such rabies vaccination, as hereinafter specified.
(3) Tagged the dog or cat as hereinafter specified. The provisions of this paragraph shall not be applicable to community cat caretakers.

Sec. 4-3. - License, registration, and vaccination.
No person shall own, keep or harbor a dog or cat without having:
(1)License, registration, and vaccination in accordance with state law.
(2)Proof of a current certificate of rabies vaccination. Such animal shall be inoculated against rabies by a licensed veterinarian in accordance with the following: vaccinated against rabies by a licensed veterinarian at three (3) months of age, initially, vaccinated one (1) year later and vaccinated either annually or triannually, thereafter.

Sec. 18-168. - Dogs and cats to be vaccinated.
The owner or keeper of every dog or cat between three and four months old shall, at his expense, have such dog or cat vaccinated by a Louisiana licensed veterinarian with rabies vaccine. Twelve months later, the animal shall be revaccinated. Thereafter, such dog or cat shall be revaccinated every 36 months by a licensed Louisiana veterinarian, under rules and regulations to be prescribed by the director. The veterinarian must provide to the owner the date when the dog or cat must be revaccinated.
