A Brief History of the Municipal Court of New Orleans: 1951

1951

On February 12, 1951, the new Municipal Courts Building opened at 501 N. Rampart. Soon, however, a public outcry arose over a statue mounted on the exterior wall. Entitled "The Family," by local artist Enrique Alférez, it depicted a naked father, mother, and son. The statute was soon covered in a tarpaulin, and eventually sold. Many of the artist's works may be seen today in City Park. After restoration, "The Family" will also be there.
