The Florida Parishes: 1819

1819

The King of Spain ceded to the United States all the territories which belonged to him, situated to the eastward of the Mississippi, known by the name of East and West Florida. The treaty also set the boundary-line between the two countries, west of the Mississippi, beginning at the mouth of the river Sabine and running northward. This is the first written description in a treaty of the actual physical border between Louisiana and Texas. Although the treaty was signed in 1819, it was not ratified until February 22, 1821.

On March 6, the legislature divided St. Tammany Parish, and created Washington Parish from the northern part.

"Whereas from the present superficial extent of the parish of St. Tamany, the seat of justice of the same is rendered by its remote distance extremely inconvenient to the said inhabitants; and whereas the population of the said parish will justify a division of the same"

SEC. 1. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the State of Louisiana, in General Assembly convened, That the said parish shall be divided by a line running east and west, beginning at David Robertson's on the Tanchipaho, thence a direct line to Daniel Edwards on the Tchifoncta, thenca i direct line to the Strawburry Bluff's on the Bogue Chitto, and from thence a line on east until it strikes Pearl River, which said line it shall be the duty of the Surveyor of the parish to run, and plainly mark and designate, and the expence of the same to be defrayed by the parish of St. Tamany.  [sic] (numerous)
