A Brief History of the Orleans Civil District Court: Home

home

Throughout Louisiana, district courts handle both civil and criminal matters. In Orleans parish, however, there is a separate Civil District Court and a Criminal District Court.

The state legislature frequently passed legislation concerning the civil courts. At times, the legislature re-organized the whole court system in Orleans Parish. The guide only covers the legislation; it does not attempt to find the reasons behind all of the changes made during the long history of the civil courts in Orleans Parish.

The Court has had several different locations before its current home at 421 Loyola Avenue.
