Although a notary public holds an office that is indispensable to the smooth functioning of law in Louisiana, the notary is seen as non-political. In several constitutions, the phrase "No person shall hold or exercise, at the same time, more than one office of trust or profit, except that of justice of the peace, or notary public." remains the same.
