A Brief History of the Orleans Criminal District Court: 1898

Constitution Art. 132. There shall be two District Courts for the Parish of Orleans, and no more. One of said courts shall be known as the Civil District Court, and the other as the Criminal District Court. For the Civil District Court there shall be not less than five judges, and for the Criminal District Court not less than two judges, who shall be elected by a plurality of the qualified electors of the Parish of Orleans for the term of twelve years, and who shall each receive an annual salary of four thousand dollars, payable upon his own warrant, in equal monthly instalments.[sic]

Act No. 93.]              AN ACT
To make the crime of bigamy punishable in the Penitentiary and to repeal all Iaws in conflict with this act.

Act No. 135.]           AN ACT
Relative to juries in and for the State of Louisiana, the Parish of Orleans excepted, and to carry out the provisions of Articles 116 and 117, of the Constitution, to prescribe the qualifications of grand and petit jurors and the exemption of certain person from service as jurors; to provide for a Jury Commission in each parish; to prescribe the manner of drawing juries and of selecting grand and petit jurors and to confer on District Judges certain discretionary powers in relation thereto; to provide for the summoning of jurors, prescribing means to enforce their attendance; and penalties for their non-attendance; for their compensation and for the taxing of jury costs in civil jury cases; to fix the number of peremptory challenges in civil and criminal jury cases, and to repeal Act No. 99, of the General Assembly of 1896, entitled: "An act relative to juries, etc.," approved July 9, 1896, and all laws or parts of laws, in conflict with the provisions of this act.

Act No. 201.]              AN ACT
To create a commission to draft a code of criminal law, criminal procedure, and criminal correction, and to fix the compensation or salary of the members thereof and their clerk, pursuant to Article 322 and 324 of the Constitution of 1898.
